Andrew Hughes Confirmed as Deputy Secretary of HUD

The U.S. Senate confirmed Andrew Hughes as Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) today with a 51-43 vote. In this role, Hughes will serve as HUD’s Chief Operating Officer, working under the leadership of the Trump administration and Secretary Scott Turner. He will focus on restoring HUD’s core mission: fostering strong communities that support quality, affordable homeownership, economic development, and self-sufficiency for all Americans.

As Deputy Secretary, Hughes will lead HUD’s daily operations and play a key role in advancing the department’s mission. His nomination received support from former HUD Secretary Ben Carson, Senator Tim Scott, chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, and numerous housing and community development organizations.

On April 10, 2025, Hughes testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs. You can read his full testimony here.

Hughes previously served as Chief of Staff at HUD under both Secretary Ben Carson and Secretary Scott Turner. HUD recognizes him as the youngest Deputy Secretary in the department’s history.
