Yesterday, Scott Turner was confirmed to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The Senate vote was 55-44.
Scott Turner and Where He Stands On the Issues
During his confirmation hearing, Turner said, “HUD is failing at its most basic mission,” noting issues like affordable housing and homelessness. He also resisted the idea that more federal spending is needed to address these issues but stated that HUD needs to streamline programs, specifically voucher programs like Section 8.
Scott Turner’s Background
According to Wikipedia, Turner is an American businessman, motivational speaker, politician, and former professional football player. He served as the executive director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council from 2019 to 2021. Before that, he was a state representative for Texas’s 33rd House District, which includes part of Collin County and all of Rockwall County, from 2013 to 2017. Before entering politics, Turner played cornerback in the National Football League (NFL) for nine seasons.
From 2007 to 2023, Turner worked at Systemware, a company specializing in content management software, where he held various positions, including Chief Inspiration Officer.
He is also the founder and president of the Community Engagement & Opportunity Council (CEOC), an organization dedicated to supporting children living in poverty. CEOC is recognized for renovating the Literacy Lab in Bonton, a neighborhood in Dallas.
In 2023, Turner was appointed Chief Visionary Officer of JPI, a national developer, builder, and investment manager focused on Class A, attainable, and affordable multifamily assets across the United States.
Turner and his wife, Robin, own Statesman Clothiers, a custom men’s clothing company. Additionally, he runs Scott Turner Consulting Group, LLC, providing consulting services since 2020 to organizations such as the NFL, Guidestone Financial, Avondale Dealerships, and the America First Policy Institute.
